Market to Market
Like any true chef and foodie open air markets are my favorite places to go to and explore. It’s like taking a little kid to a candy shop…it’s that exciting for me. Anyway back to the market…I was lucky to live in Des Moines for most of my life and go out almost every Saturday morning to our downtown Farmer’s Market. Every time I went there I would always find something new and exciting among the old classics.
I believe any kind of market, open-air or in a building, is the best way to discover the surrounding community and the cultures of a place. Whether it maybe the Des Moines Farmers Market or the amazing French Markets that I got to see on my trip to Lyon I love to go and see what the place has to offer. (The only thing I was slightly disappointed in was the fact that our personal time that the French market was we didn’t stay long enough!) If I were to go back to that market again I wouldn’t want to sit down and eat for three hours getting stuffed as if I were a duck getting fattened and then killed for my little liver. (However, let me tell you…my poor little liver got a big work out going over to France for ten days!) No, if and when I go back to that market I would walk around to the slower! Take thousands upon thousands of pictures and taste and buy as much as I could.
The Asian Markets are what interest me the most- all those bright beautiful colors and you can’t even start to image the number of smells that would float through the air. I would really love to go to Japan’s biggest fish market and see all the fishes and being able to taste some of the freshest foods that would be made. In India there are spices and herbs that can expand from one street corner and go on to the next. And of course with all the small vendors with the fresh and delicious foods there will be small food stalls in between that buy and cook what is near.
When I watch the Travel Channels “No Reservations” with Anthony Bourdain or “Bizarre Foods” with Andrew Zimmern oh, how I envy all the vast market scenes! They got to experience and go about tasting the many wonders that the markets have to give! Someday I will do just that! Travel the world and go to the best markets and take those pictures and of course sample all the foods and discover something new.
